Through the ages, there have been many practices for keeping one's mind and body healthy. Perhaps the best of these, which today is popular all around the world, is Yoga. The science of Yoga was developed more than two thousand years ago in India. This ancient practice involves a series of physical exercises and breathing techniques that help to rejuvenate every part of the body and calm the mind. Yoga has been popularly defined as 'union with the divine'. MJ Tours & Travel offers a special Yoga workshop which provides a unique opportunity to learn Yoga whilst exploring some truly beautiful destinations.
Day 1 : Arrival at Trivandrum Airport
You will be received by MJ Tours & Travel's crew in Thiruvananthapuram, formerly known as Trivandrum, capital of Kerala and be transferred to Kovalam for the first night. Thiruvananthapuram is a name derived from Lord Anantha and refers to Lord Padmanabaswamy Temple, dedicated to Vishnu.
Day 2 : Kovalam
Let's have a relaxed start to the trip and in the morning visit wonderful beaches. We will go to Lighthouse Beach, the most popular beach in Kerala, Hawah Beach, which offers sporting activities, and Samudra Beach, an ideal beach for sunbathing. In the evening, we will visit Sree Padmanabaswamy Temple, one of the wealthiest temples in Kerala, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, and then a nearby museum with art galleries. We will return to the hotel for an early night.
Day 3 : Kovalam
Kerala is renowned for its scenic beauty, Ayurveda, beaches, backwaters and tea plantations. Our Kerala Yoga workshop also ranks highly among these attractions. After an early rise, prepare for your first session of Yoga at sunrise on the beach. This session will be a gentle one to develop strength, endurance and flexibility while refreshing both body and mind. The session will last one and a half hours. We will have the rest of the day to spend on the beach for sunbathing and relaxation. In the evening at sunset, we will gather for another session of Yoga which will help you to have a good night's rest.
Day 4 : Varkala / Kappil Beach
We are not in any hurry. You can get up late and then we will travel to Kappil Beach, 70 km from Kovalam. This beach is known for its backwaters, water sports and natural beauty. On our way, we will stop to visit the 2000 year-old Janardana Swamy Temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu. Then will go to Papanasam Beach, the famous cremation centre of South India, where you will have the opportunity to witness the cremation rituals performed there. We will check in and relax at our hotel on Kappil Beach. In the evening, there will be another Yoga session. This session will help you to increase flexibility and free energy blocks. We will relax for the night in our tranquil hotel at Kappil Beach.
Day 5 : Kappil Beach
It's another relaxed day where. We will start our Yoga session in the morning. In this session you will learn how to stay fit and reduce excess weight. We will enjoy the warm, sunny weather on the beach and be received at a local fisherman's house for lunch. This will give us the opportunity to learn more about the local people's day-to-day lives and their culture. We can take the rest of the day at our own pace and spend it on the beach. We will stay one more night at Kappil Beach.
Day 6 : Kuttanad
After breakfast, we will have a wonderful opportunity to visit the beautiful and unique Kuttanad, which occupies the lowest land in India, and is one of the few places in the world where farming is carried out below sea level. Kuttanad is 95 km from Kappil Beach. We will rest at the hotel until lunch and walk around the farming fields in the afternoon. In the evening we will visit a farmer's house to learn more about local people's lives. Let's gear up for another refreshing session of Yoga. In this session, you will learn how to massage the internal organs of the body, including the thyroid gland. We will have a peaceful evening and stay overnight in Kuttanad.
Day 7 : Kuttanad
After an early rise, we will enjoy another session of Yoga in a beautiful location. In this session, you will learn how to treat several health disorders, such as backache and arthritis. We will relax until lunch and in the afternoon we will go for a canoe ride. This is a paddle sport in which you kneel or sit facing forward in an open or closed-deck canoe and propel yourself with a single-bladed paddle. Not to be missed from the canoe is the sunset over the water. We will spend the night in Kuttanad.
Day 8 : Alleppey
Let's get ourselves prepared for another exciting day. We will travel to Alleppey, which is 22 km from Kuttand. Alleppey, with its picturesque canals, backwaters, beaches and lagoons, was described by Lord Curzon as the 'Venice of the East' and is considered to be the oldest town in this region. After reaching Alleppey, we will check in to a wonderful houseboat and enjoy a cruise on Vembanad Lake. We will stay overnight in the houseboat.
Day 9 : Alleppey
Let's get ready for another calming session of Yoga. In this session we will be taught the techniques of Meditation, Pranayama (Breathing), Relaxation and Cleansing. After breakfast, we will travel to Thekkady, 140 km from Alleppey. Thekkady is known for the Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary. In the afternoon, we will go on an Elephant Safari, a ride on an elephant through the jungle, which lasts around half an hour. In the evening, we will attend a Kerala Dance show, a form of dance that has evolved from Kerala Kathakali. This show will last from 6.30 to 7.30 pm. After dinner, we will return to the hotel for the night.
Day 10 : Thekkady area
An early morning, and at 7.30 am we will take a boat trip on Periyar Lake for around two hours. We will have the opportunity to spot animals such as elephants, sambars and monkeys. The lake, surrounded by forest, provides a very scenic setting. We will relax at the hotel until the evening when we will gather for another rejuvenating session of Yoga amidst the jungle. You will learn how to overcome stress and negative thought patterns, a challenging practice for many people. We will stay overnight in Thekkady.
Day 11 : Munnar
After a relaxed breakfast, we will travel to Munnar, the 'honeymoon paradise', 85 km from Thekkady. In the afternoon, we will visit Mattupatty Dam, a Concrete Gravity dam built into the mountains of Kerala, and Tata Tea Museum, a tea factory where a guide will explain the process of tea making. In the evening, amidst the tropical mountain misty weather, we will assemble for another Yoga session, which will be Hatha Yoga. We will stay overnight in our comfortable hotel in Munnar.
Day 12 : Munnar
Perfect weather for a morning Yoga session, and we will perform a session of different asanas and postures. We will rest at the hotel until the afternoon and then trek to the Pallivasal waterfalls in Devikulam, which offer a spectacular expansive view. We will stay overnight again in Munnar.
Day 13 : Cochin
We will get up at leisure and travel to Cochin, 133 km from Munnar. The journey to Cochin will be an exciting one on the winding roads over this hilly terrain. After check in to our lovely hotel in Fort Kochi, we will relax until the afternoon. At around 3 pm we will visit the Mattanchery Dutch Palace, which offers outstanding displays of Hindu temple art, portraits and exhibits of the Rajas of Kochi, and then the Jewish Synagogue, the oldest active synagogue in the British Commonwealth of Nations. We will stay overnight in Fort Kochi.
Day 14 : Cochin (Fort Cochin)
We will have a relaxed morning and get up late. In the afternoon, we will walk around St. Francis Church and the Chinese fishing nets. In the evening, we will attend a Kerala Kathakali Dance show, which lasts from 5.30 to 7.30 pm.
Day 15 : Transfer to Cochin Airport
You will be transferred to Cochin airport, 30 minutes from Fort Kochi. We will leave you with the hope that we will have been able to serve all your needs to the highest standards and that you will have enjoyed a wonderful and memorable visit to our beautiful country.
